Robert Foster Bennett was born in 1944 in New Carlisle, Ohio. He received his BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design (now The School for Creative Studies) (1964), where he studied painting, printmaking, photography, and drawing. He also studied art history at Ohio State University.
He went on to receive the MFA in painting from the University of Iowa (1969), where he studied under Frank Beltrami. His work has been shown in various exhibitions around the country, including solo exhibitions at the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Carnegie Institute of Washington, D.C., and the National Museum of American Art

Bennett's art "strives for an idealized vision of American culture, informed by nostalgia and mythicized memory" (Hall). His paintings are featured in several museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C., and The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. He lives and works in Cincinnati, Ohio.
